The Dog Squad saves its 100th dog on their one year anniversary

August 7, 2008

The Dog Squad announces the rescue of 100 dogs since it was granted 501(c)(3), tax-exempt status exactly one year ago.

The Dog Squad's 100th rescue is a young, Shar Pei/Labrador mix brought to the county shelter in Carlsbad by Amy Cartwright, a veterinary technician at All Pets Animal Hospital in Encinitas. Amy found "Monty", as he's now been named by the staff at the hospital, roaming with a pack of dogs. She initially took Monty to the Rancho Coastal Humane Society but was turned away. She was told that the dog was not suitable for their shelter.

Monty has a medical condition called "Entropion," a genetic condition of the eye, which makes his chances of finding an adopter at the shelter slim. Unable to take the dog to her home where she is not allowed to have pets, Cartwright contacted a number of rescues to help Monty but only The Dog Squad responded. They agreed to take Monty after meeting him and observing his lively and friendly demeanor. In the meantime, Cartwright generously arranged for All Pets Animal Hospital to surgically correct the Entropian and to neuter Monty as a charitable donation. Upon being rescued as the 100th dog on The Dog Squad's one year anniversary, Monty will be honored as the Dog Squad's "Dog of the Year" on the Dog Squad's website.

The Dog Squad team has been working very closely with the county shelter in Carlsbad since they began as a non-profit one year ago. The Dog Squad has rescued over 60 dogs from shelter in the past year, many of them larger or older dogs. In addition, through its adoption events and networking, it has found homes for an additional 15+ shelter dogs.

Dominique Moreira leaves TDS

June 2008

Dominique Moreira has decided to leave the board of The Dog Squad. She is going through some changes in her life and cannot devote the necessary time to being a board member. She will still help as a volunteer when she can and will continue as a volunteer dog walker at the Carlsbad shelter. TDS thanks her for all that she's done for the group and needy dogs.

Marci Pascua joins TDS

April 2008

Marci Pascua, one of The Dog Squad's valued volunteers and foster parents, has joined the board. Along with her love of dogs, Marci brings many skills, including video editing. She is also a great fundraiser and has helped to raise much needed money. She is a valuable addition to the team.

TDS reaches 50!

January 16th, 2008

The rescue of Puff and Flash from the Carlsbad shelter today puts the number of dogs that The Dog Squad has officially rescued at 50. TDS got off to a slow start while they waited for their 501(c)(3) status but, since they received it on August 7th, 2007, they have rescued an average of 10 dogs a month. They mostly take dogs that have been declined by other rescues -- the older or larger dogs.
